Women's Bible Study: The Prayer of a Broken-Hearted Man- Psalm 55

Today we're going to be looking at Psalm 55.

And Psalm 55 is, Susan calls it in the study guide, the prayer of a broken hearted man.

So we're going to talk a little bit about that this morning.

So you kind of have a backstory in case you don't understand who Absalom is.

So we're going to, I'm going to briefly read to you from the Holman Illustrated Bible Dictionary.

Just so we have a brief understanding of who Absalom is.

and who Ahithophel is.

Susan takes the perspective, but I want to just give a brief overview about these two men, because Susan takes the perspective that Psalm 55 is talking about them.

Now, I read, I think, in the Moody Commentary that we don't know exactly who David's talking about, It seems to allude that he that there's one person in there that he knows it was like a friend to him that went to the temple with him.

And we'll read through that.

But Moody commentary seemed to take the perspective that it was alluding to when David hid in the cave from Saul.

So regardless, we're going to be looking at Absalom and Ahithophel and see how this could possibly fit into Psalm 55.

Regardless of this, David, it's a lament psalm.

So David is lamenting here, as we see in many of the Psalms, that the psalmist is praising God and then showing moments of despair, discouragement, and then reminding themselves again of who God is and to trust in him.

And that's the life of a Christian.

It's not always a mountaintop experience.

where everything's great, the unicorns and rainbows are just flying by, and everything's good.

There's no chaos or calamity going on.

There's valley moments.

There's the moments where, no worries, Terry, you're good.

There's moments where it feels really dark.

And we don't, for lack of better words, we don't feel God.

And we have to be very careful with that.

But I hope you understand what I'm saying with that.

It's in those moments that you just think, I'm alone.
