So there's a split there, right? He's in Hebron and now Jerusalem.

The sons born to David in Jerusalem included Shemua, Shobab, Nathan.

That's a different Nathan.

We read about a Nathan before.

And Solomon.

By including the women, Matthew is priming his readers such that when the shift is made, a shift that no Jewish genealogical tradition would allow, it seems more natural, even expected.

Luke, on the other hand, attempts to fix this by tracing a Davidic lineage directly through Mary, perhaps to Natan, brother of Solomon, which is better than Matthew's connection to Jehoniah, who is just kind of cursed and not allowed to be a king.

None of his offspring are allowed to be kings.

Further, the lineage through Mary is attractive because it also contains plenty of Matthews and Levi's names associated with priestly lineages as well, which makes some sense given that Mary's relative Elizabeth married into a priestly family.

And David took him more concubines and wives out of Jerusalem, after he was come from Hebron: and there were yet sons and daughters born to David.

And these be the names of those that were born unto him in Jerusalem; Shammua, and Shobab, and Nathan, and Solomon, Ibhar also, and Elishua, and Nepheg, and Japhia, And Elishama, and Eliada, and Eliphalet.

But when the Philistines heard that they had anointed David king over Israel, all the Philistines came up to seek David.
