Abiathar

So David reigned over all Israel, and David administered justice and equity to all his people.

Joab the son of Zeruiah was over the army, and Jehoshaphat the son of Ahilud, was Recorder, and Zadok the son of Ahitub, and Ahimelech the son of Abiathar were priests, and Sariah was secretary, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was over the Kerethites and the Pelethites, and David's sons were priests.

And David said, Is there still anyone left of the house of Saul, that I may show him kindness for Jonathan's sake? Now there was a servant of the house of Saul whose name was Ziba, and they called him to David.

And the king said to him, Are you Ziba? And he said, I am your servant.

And while Jesus was walking on the Sabbath day among the sown fields, his disciples hungered, and they were rubbing the ears with their hands, and eating.

But some of the Pharisees, when they saw them, said unto him, See, why do thy disciples on the Sabbath day that which is not lawful? But Jesus said unto them, Have ye not read in olden time what David did, when he had need and hungered, he and those that were with him; how he entered the house of God, when Abiathar was high priest, and ate the bread of the table of the Lord, which it was not lawful that any should eat, save the priests, and gave to them that were with him also? And he said unto them, The Sabbath was created because of man, and man was not created because of the Sabbath.

Or have ye not read in the law, that the priests in the temple profane the Sabbath, and yet they are blameless? I say unto you now, that here is what is greater than the temple.

If ye had known this, I love mercy, not sacrifice, ye would not have condemned those on whom is no blame.

Verse 24.

And Abiathar came up, and behold, Zadok came also with all the Levites, bearing the ark of the covenant of God.

And they set down the ark of God until the people had all passed out of the city.

Then the king said to Zadok, carry the ark of God back into the city.

But if he says, I have no pleasure in you, behold, here I am.

Let him do to me what seems good to him.

The king also said to Zadok the priest, Are you not a seer? Go back into the city in peace with your two sons, Ahamaz, your son, and Jonathan, the son of Abiathar.

See, I will wait at the fords of the wilderness until word comes from you to inform me.

And so you'd say, okay, well, where's the fulfillment of this? Well, just a couple chapters later in 1 Samuel 4, 11, we're told, and this is, again, just a great demonstration of God's accuracy in predicting these things.

because when israel goes and fights the philistines the ark is captured hafni and phineas were there at the battle and they both die the same day on that battle just two chapters later so hafni and phineas yes they both die and then later on as you know david is being as being chased around by saul and he's proving himself well you have kind of a conflict in the priesthood where you have Abiathar, or some people call him Abiathar, I think, Abiathar, he ends up being an accomplice to try to make the wrong son of David king.

And so what ends up happening is...

This is David's instruction to, I think it was Benaiah at this point.

Yeah, so Solomon sends Benaiah to do this.

And so to Abiathar the priest, the king, say, go to an oath to your estate for you deserve death.

So this is you're being banished now, Abiathar the priest.

But I will not at this time put you to death because you carried the ark of the Lord God before David, my father, and because you shared in all my father's afflictions.
