Episode 40-[S6]- Near Dark (1987)

This is a film that I saw many moons ago.

I think my mother was the one who recommended it.

She was like, oh, it's kind of a cool, vibey vampire movie.

And...

I have not seen it in probably about 20 years and I, I still, I enjoy it.

I was saying to you before we began that this is, this is my drive.

This movie is, is all vibes.

This is a hundred percent of vibe movie over a plot driven movie or a character developing movie.

This is all vibes.

It's soundtrack, it's visuals, it's, you know, Bill Paxton.

Um, I think it's a lot of fun.

I don't think it is necessary.

It's not a traditional, by any means, vampire movie.

They don't say the word vampire.

They don't apply most vampire things to it other than one or two, which was very intentional.

It's just kind of this meandering story of a guy who joins up with a gang and then gets out.

And that's your plot, essentially.

All for the love of a woman.

It's fun, it's weird, it's cool, it's not a movie that I think that I need to watch a lot, but it's one of those ones where it's like if you know somebody who's really into vampire lore or into like westerns or into, you know, this kind of thing, I think it's a fun one to have in the back pocket, to be like, it's a cool view, it's only an hour and a half, like it's an easy watch, it's fun and different and you can really see the beginnings of Bigelow's directorial You know, I think you can you can sort of draw.

I mean, obviously you can draw a direct line, but direct line from this to like Point Breaker or Strange Days or, you know, a lot of what what Bigelow kind of ends up doing and how she operates and the vibe.

There's really cool shots in this movie, like all of them coming over the hill.

with the light behind him.

She really sort of captures the American West, Southwest, I guess.

And it's just, it's a really nice platform for some actors to really just go all out, you know, Bill Paxton in particular.

I mean, this is a Bill Paxton showpiece, 100%.
