Defying Tyrants: Matthew D. Taylor on Jesus, Empire, and Christian Antichrists

Matthew D. Taylor joins Jim Wallis for a searching conversation about his new book, ***Defying Tyrants: Following Jesus in a World of Christian Antichrists*.** Taylor, an authoritative voice on the dangers of Christian Nationalism and avisiting scholar at Georgetown University’s Center on Faith + Justice, examines what happens when Christians harm others in Jesus’ name while claiming divine authority for political power. He traces the long history of Christianity’s entanglement with empire—from Constantine’s conversion through today’s Christian Nationalist Movements—and calls the church back to the anti-authoritarian way of Jesus. Jim and Matthew discuss  - the New Apostolic Reformation, - the Seven Mountains Mandate, - the “gospel of Caesar,” - the difference between conquest and service, and - why Christian discipleship requires both caring for the victims of empire and defying the empire itself. ***Defying Tyrants*** is a call to reject religious supremacy, confront the abuse of power, and follow Jesus in solidarity with “the least and the lowest.” See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
