Herod Antipas

There's a lot of historians that mention these ways that these apostles died.

James, the son of Zebedee, was beheaded by Herod Antipas.

John, the son of Zebedee, survived being boiled in oil and was exiled to the island of Patmos and died, uh, in old age at Ephesus.

Philip was also crucified upside down while preaching the gospel in Hieropo- Hierapolis, which is modern-day Turkey.

"Knowest thou the worshipful Asa who lives in the great house near to the lake?" "Yes," said Titus briefly.

"He serves Herod Antipas." "Well," went on Prisca, "know then that his only son lay grievously ill of the fever.

All the doctors had given him up to die, and his mother and father were well-nigh distracted with grief.

His father had heard these idle tales, as thou callest them, and he believed them, insomuch that he set forth himself to see Jesus, for so is the Nazarene called.

If what John Baptist saith be true, and he is indeed the Christ, we ought to be with him where he is.

And now John lieth in prison, and we cannot tell what may befall him there.

May Jehovah grant that Herod cast not his evil eye upon the Master.

And the light shineth in the darkness, and the darkness apprehended it not.

There was in the days of Herod the king a priest whose name was Zacharias of the family of Abijah and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron and her name was Elizabeth.

And they were both righteous before God walking in all his commands and in the uprightness of God without reproach.

And they had no son for Elizabeth was barren and they had both advanced in age.

And when they had accomplished every thing according to what is in the law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee, to Nazareth, their city.

And after that the Magi came from the east to Jerusalem, and said, Where is the king of the Jews which was born? We have seen his star in the east, and have come to worship him.

And Herod the king heard, and he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.

And he gathered all the chief priests and the scribes of the people, and asked them in what place the Messiah should be born.

Because Herod was the Herod that we find in the Gospels.

It was Herod Antipas.

Antipas.

Now Herod Antipas was a main character in the New Testament, and he was an adversary of the gospel.

He is the one responsible for beheading John the Baptist.

Remember that story? John the Baptist shows up as a prophet, and he calls this man out for marrying his brother's wife.

It's called Machaerus.

And he's arrested by one Herod Antipas.

At the time of Jesus' birth, Judea was under the control of Herod the Great, best known for building the massive temple in Jerusalem that the Romans would later destroy.

And by the time Jesus died and expanded, Judea was under the rule of Herod Antipater, also unhelpfully known as Herod.

Both Herods ultimately took their orders from the Romans, and they both show up on the list of rulers who were oppressive to the

Jews.
