Colby Day Is The Pitchmaster General

Screenwriter Colby Day joins the guys in their new studio to give advice on pitching and speccing, spread awareness about the Tony Shalhoub Monkiverse, and bring Universal backlot monsters to life. Colby's substack "Hollyweird" is one of the highest subbed industry newsletters, offering tips, news, and insider anecdotes about breaking into screenwriting. His credits include "Spaceman" on Netflix with Adam Sandler and Carey Mulligan, and Fox Searchlight's "In The Blink Of An Eye" with Kate McKinnon and Rashida Jones, directed by Andrew Stanton Find Colby at https://hollyweird.colbyday.com 00:00 Intro 1:55 Colby wants to demystify the industry  5:05 Round 1: As Good As It Gets meets Collateral 16:00 Colby’s nugget of pitching wisdom 18:26 The advice that resonated most with Colby’s audience 20:34 Colby wants to know what makes a good pitch to the Greenlight guys 22:40 Round 2: Ratatouille meets Old School 31:36 What Colby learned from Andrew Stanton 36:04 Round 3: Monsters Inc. meets The Player 47:09 Tiebreaker  50:40 Colby’s Rave \---- A movie podcast from the people that write them.  Three working screenwriters in the trenches of Hollywood play a game where they draw two random movies and are forced to instantly come up with a classic “this meets this” movie pitch. What started as a drinking game at Glen Powell’s house spiraled into hundreds of unhinged movie ideas, a few real script sales, and a ton of laughs. Now, it’s a podcast. Each episode is part interview, part game show where we’re joined by writers, actors, filmmakers, executives and celebrities to play along… all competing to pitch the one idea that gets the green light… while the rest get sent to development hell.
