Jose Francisco AvilaHostHonduran New Yorkers form one of this city's vital Central American communities, and Garifuna New Yorkers represent a profound intersection.
We are Black, Afro-Indigenous, Caribbean, Central American, Latino, immigrant, and unapologetically American.
Yet, for decades, city institutions and public data sets flatten our complex heritage into a single generic checkbox, erasing our distinct voice before our people could even be counted.
Our deepest historic roots run through the South Bronx in West Farms, Crotona Park East, Claremont, Morrisania, and along East Tremont Avenue.
Today, Garifuna life pulses across Harlem, Brooklyn, Queens, Westchester, and Long Island.
It is a living map written in the brick and mortar of storefronts, churches, music studios, family dining tables, and sheer struggle.
But as the late community leader, Astin Jacobo, noted with painful accuracy, "Until a tragedy happens, nobody knows the importance of a community." [upbeat music] A community the city had not learned to see.
