Temporary protected status

It is not the process created under immigration law.

This short and vague statement leaves TPS holder from El Salvador in a more complicated legal limbo.

US President Donald Trump has slashed temporary protected status for countries around the world, but El Salvador is different.

Their designation was set to expire Wednesday, September 9th, but the administration hasn't made up its mind yet.

And, you know, not knowing most immigration law offices do have multiple languages covered if you just call us or, you know, they think that they're going to be extremely expensive.

So they, they fault the people like this.

A deadline for the Trump administration to extend legal protections for Salvadoran immigrants has passed without the government acknowledging it expired.

The Department of Homeland Security says it would make an announcement at an appropriate time and that temporary protected status or TPS for El Salvador would remain in effect until then.

Under immigration law, TPS is automatically extended for six months if the government takes no action.

But some attorneys warn the administration could still act without making a public statement.

But this silence has raised hopes among some Salvadorans that their TPS could be extended for another six months.

Union leaders in Las Vegas are concerned the service industry will take a hit as potentially thousands of workers lose temporary protected status this week.

The city's tourism industry relies on its hospitality workers, including many from El Salvador who came to the U.S. under Temporary Protected Status, or TPS, which provides protections from deportation and work permits to those whose countries are deemed too unsafe to return to.

Culinary union spokesperson Ted Papa George said the workers are critical to hotels, casinos, and other businesses in Las Vegas.

We have thousands of TPS members who are culinary union members, Papa George said.

Many of them, like our Salvadorian brothers and sisters, have been here for decades.

They have children, they have homes, they pay taxes, and they're critical to our economy here in Las Vegas.

And now I'm going to get your heart racing because TPS is set to expire for around 170,000 Salvadorans on September 9th.

Oh.
