England have announced their squad to take on New Zealand next month, and there are plenty of familiar talking points. Alan Gardner is joined by Andrew Miller and Vithushan Ehantharajah to go through…
Uh, Miller, any upgrade on Meh, which was I think your, uh, reaction to the build-up to the, this, uh, selection, uh, announcement a couple of weeks ago?
And that's the only thing I think is a little bit, um, a little bit performative about it maybe, is, like, picking such a big squad just for the sake of being able to say, "Oh, we've given so and so a look in," when as you say, actually when it come, when push comes to shove it's probably only gonna be three, three changes.
Ollie Robinson signs almost certainly as though he's gonna, um, come, come, come straight back in to, to lead, lead the, um, the bowling.
Who knows? I mean, Joe Root's bowling well enough to, to justify being a spinner, but, um, and, and being early season, all the rest of it.
I, I, I like the theory that, yeah, they've, they've given a nod to county cricket, but I still await proof that they, they mean it.
I mean, classic example for me has always been Jamie Porter, uh, when he was picked in 2018 as a sort of nod to county cricket.
And he was in the squad throughout the, the series against India, and you never at any stage in that, in that, in that summer got the sense that he was ever gonna get a look in.
And y- you know, you do wonder if that's perhaps where we might end up with by the end of the season will we be saying the same thing.
You know, the way Matt Fisher bowled, I mean, obviously he, he bowled very well, uh, very well the other day, um, against, uh, Yorkshire, wasn't it? They're getting, getting, getting Root, and I think, uh, Brooker's out, out as well.
