I

Had, had a great trip up to Canada, working with John Herdman with the Canadian women's national team.

And then towards the end of my time, um, at, at QUT, I had a, a week in with the England Lions in Dubai, um, helping design and run the training camp for, for the basically England's B team.
I

Um, at the same time, kept going back to New Zealand, kept getting invited back to New Zealand, I guess, nicely.
I

Um, and did trips designed for helping coaches and coach developers, um, implementing constraint-led approaches.

I did an interview rec- soon before that with Wisden, and we were talking about Freddie Flintoff being my coach in the Lions the winter before in Australia, and how I've got a bit of a strut when I bat, a bit of confidence, you know? And he, Freddie was saying, "You want that kind of confidence.
E
10:36Emilio GayGUEST
Don't lose that arrogance, you know, when you're playing." And he obviously heard that or saw that, and he, he just said words to the effect of, um, "I know what Freddie's talking about and I'm glad he likes it, 'cause it's doing my head in." And he went, like, something like the lines of, "You know, you carry on like that basically.
E
10:52Emilio GayGUEST
It's, you know, it's not gonna get you far," something like that.

Yeah.
E
17:02Emilio GayGUEST
Um, different players, but probably them.

And then the amazing thing is you kind of come into cricket now, and this is what I found, you know, coming into the England dressing room in the last six months or so, um, and the Lions the last y- 18 months, and you come, come around these guys, Joe Root for example, and play with them and train with them, and it's just awesome, you know? Like, I was watching them-

Yeah.

Um, there's a lot going on in, in, in terms of tours.
H
24:35Henry CrocombeGUEST
I mean, there's Lions and first team tours all winter.
H
24:38Henry CrocombeGUEST
Um, obviously I'd love to be on the t- the first team tours as much as I can.
H
24:42Henry CrocombeGUEST
You know, if I get my chance, I'll absolutely take it.

Although next year we look to be hosting Sussex County Cricket Club.
M
21:16Martin MakepeaceHOST
Also the England Lions, the over 60s are talking to us as well.
M
21:20Martin MakepeaceHOST
You know, we've got this high end T10s.
M
21:23Martin MakepeaceHOST
So we are moving in that direction, but we don't want to go exclusively for that market, Tom, because we want, you know, as I say, we find ourselves, we see ourselves as a gateway destination.

Yeah.

And I suppose he's probably more of a Lions type.
J
48:33JackGUEST
Yeah, definitely.
S
48:35SophieHOST
Yeah.
S
48:36SophieHOST
And sorry, can you carry on, Jack?
J
48:37JackGUEST
Yeah, one thing I noted as well from Fleming in the interview was he did seem quite big on sort of the Lions and the 19.
J
48:46JackGUEST
So it looks like there's going to be sort of or sounds like there's going to be a bit more of sort of an integrated set up.
J
48:52JackGUEST
So I think potentially we do see a situation where, you know, you've got the Lions sort of in and around sort of the main group.

Yep.
R
50:32Riccardo BallHOST
Um, so he's just replaced Andrew Flintoff as the head of the England Lions team, which is basically like England A effectively, right? So they've got tours coming up for the Windies, South Africa and Sri Lanka.
R
50:44Riccardo BallHOST
Uh, and Trott of course brings a lot of experience, not only from his time, uh, with Afghanistan, but as a player, like this passed me by.
R
50:52Riccardo BallHOST
He played 52 tests for England, right? Which doesn't seem a whole heap in, you know, when you talk about some of the greats of the game who have played 100 odd tests.
A
50:59Alex ChapmanHOST
Yeah.
R
50:59Riccardo BallHOST
But in 52 tests, he won the Ashes three times, which is remarkable.
R
51:05Riccardo BallHOST
Uh, and he takes, uh, charge of that England Lions team.
R
51:08Riccardo BallHOST
We talked about it at the time when, uh, England were falling over in white ball.

The other appointment that came out, uh, in fact just yesterday I think it was, Jeff, is that Jonathan Trott's gonna be the Lions coach.
A
51:29Adam CollinsHOST
So this is of course after Freddie Flintoff moved away from that role.
A
51:32Adam CollinsHOST
Won't be long before Flintoff has a senior role elsewhere, somewhere.

Mm.

A
52:14Adam CollinsHOST
I think that's, that's a strong, uh, a strong appointment in terms of what it'll represent when players graduate from the Lions to the, to the main team, and there might be some back and forth in the short term, um, as they set up for what they're doing through the winter.
A
52:26Adam CollinsHOST
But yeah, it does feel like it's all in keeping with what they're saying at the moment, where they, they've got some ground to make up, make no mistake-
