Responding to Opposition Against God's King

How is David truly God's king? Take a look at our passage.

We start in verse 1.

David is the obedient king.

David seeks for God.

He asks in verse 1, take a look, shall I go up to one of the towns of Judah? And so God answers him.

And he goes, verse 2, David went up there.

Second, after David goes up, what happens? See how he treats the people of Jebesh Gilead.

David is not just the obedient king, he is the honorable king.

In verse 5, we are told of this people from the people of Jebesh Gilead.

They are the special people because they are the people who honored Saul.

They buried the last king.

And even in our world, as we think about how we deal with the bodies of those who have passed, we care about burials, right? And so imagine the people of the ancient Near East.

They really cared about how bodies were treated.

And as the people of Jebesh Gilead honored Saul, so King David honors them.

Verse 5, the Lord bless you for showing this kindness to Saul.

And so if we just jump back a verse, we see how this all plays out.

He's also the affirmed king, verse four.

There the leaders of Judah anointed David king over the tribe of Judah.

David is God's king.

Now at this point, I think it's clear to us, God, the narrator of Samuel is trying to show us this guy's legit.
