God's Gracious House Plan For His People

And then we come back from holidays and we wonder, what do I need to do to make that happen again? What do I need to do to stay in that moment? What do I need to do so that I can feel that happiness, that contentment, that restfulness again? Well, in our passage today, we see King David in something like a holiday mode, something like that, that perfect moment again.

This is his situation in verse 1 of our passage, 2 Samuel 7, verse 1.

After the king was settled in his palace and the Lord had given him rest from all his enemies around him.

Just pause there.

That's David's situation.

Settled in his palace.

Rest from all his enemies around him.

That sounds like holiday mode, right? David's been in this situation for a couple of chapters.

He's in the city Jerusalem.

He's in the city that he's captured and made his own.

He's ruling over his kingdom in a time of peace.

And David has been given rest from his enemies.

This is almost unheard of in Israel's history.

And so in our passage, David in this situation, he has a plan.

He knows what he's got to do to stay in that situation, to stay in that moment.

But as we work our way through the passage, we see that receiving that life, staying in that moment isn't about what David does.

He's not the one who brings this about.

So in our passage, we see that it's all about what God promises to do for David and for his people.

And it's what God has graciously done for us in Jesus.

But we'll start with David's plan.
