The following discussion was recorded in front of a live audience in Lazaridis Hall at the Tom Patterson Theatre in Stratford, Ontario, Canada.
Good morning and welcome.
My name is Julie Miles and I'm the director of the Meehan Forum.
Yesterday was Canada Day and as a country we have a lot to celebrate and it's a great place to live.
Yet before we colonizers came to live here on this land, the Anishinaabe, the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, the Wendat and the Attawanderong people had been living and raising families on this land for thousands of years, and they continue this practice now, acting as the stewards of this land and its waterways, and this responsibility extends to all of peoples to share and care for this land for generations to come.
Our special guests today are very excited to take on the task of talking about one of the most iconic and cherished musicals of all time, Guys and Dolls.
Chris Weigand from The Guardian was planning on being here today and he really wanted to be here today, but there was a family emergency and so he wasn't able to get here.
But I think we're covered because we have two pretty amazing people.
On stage today in the Meehan Forum, our special guests are two award-winning artists and artistic visionaries.
Celebrating her 30th season at the festival, she is not only the director and choreographer of Something Rotten and Guys and Dolls, but she is also the artistic associate for musical theater development.
Her innovative approach to musical theater is truly world-class and brilliant, so let's give Donna Fiore a world-class welcome.
And we are thrilled to welcome back to Stratford and to Canada, a celebrated essayist, playwright, and veteran staff writer for The New Yorker.
