First up, an aspiring writer finds his life taking a detour.
This is Tony.
Okay, so I'm just going to walk you through the basic vision of life.
Excuse me, I need to speak with you.
Didn't you punch a hole in the principal's door? You know, a lot's changed since high school.
I'm a writer now.
The truth is, I'm about to get this huge writing fellowship.
Hello? Mr.
Bourdain, the committee has decided to go with another student for the fellowship.
I need a job.
You were going to get you before.
Sorry.
Yeah.
The film focuses on the early chapters of Bourdain's memoir, Kitchen Confidential.
It is set during the summer of 1975, when a 19-year-old Bourdain was a student at Vassar College with dreams of becoming a writer.
Bourdain is an arrogant prick who believes he will, without a doubt, be chosen to spend the summer studying in a writing fellowship.
Those plans don't work out after he isn't selected, although he tells his family he was chosen.
He also learns that the woman he has had a crush on, Nancy, played by Amelia Jones, will be heading to Provincetown, Massachusetts for the summer.
Disappointed with losing out on the fellowship, Tony steals money from his father and heads to Cape Cod to follow Nancy.
However, after he arrives, he finds Nancy has been involved with a co-worker at a local pizzeria.
That night, he goes to a seafood restaurant and sits at the bar, drinking his worries away.
This does not end well when he picks a fight with one of the workers, which gets him kicked out and thrown on the street, where he is subsequently robbed while he is passed out.
He receives a second chance when he is discovered by the restaurant's owner, known as Chef, played by Oscar-nominated actor Antonio Banderas.
Chef takes him in, offers him a job washing dishes at the restaurant, as well as a place to crash at night at his home.
