So with purity culture, remember with the spanking stuff, you're taught your body is not your own and it belongs to your parents.

And when you get to purity culture, it still belongs to your parents, but your body also belongs to your future husband.

And that's why you don't want to go like fooling around, because if you have no value, then your future husband won't accept you.

I dated a few people before, but like I had a situation where my first kiss was not consensual, but I didn't have any language about consent at the time because this purity culture stuff was teaching me you'll be safe if you follow all these rules.

And it was getting down to like the nitty gritty is, oh, we can't hold hands like that's sinful.

And there were some other non-consensual things that happened during that relationship that really made sense.

I started questioning God and all these sorts of stuff, which is somewhat normal for that age, but it was also wrapped up in all this, like, shame and self-worth stuff at the time.

I had had this relationship with this guy where there was non-consensual stuff going on.

And that was a totally different experience where it was fully consensual and I felt very safe.

And it was a totally different experience than the purity culture stuff where you're taught, like, boys don't have any control over their actions or anything.

Where, like, men are portrayed almost unexpected to be in a lot of ways this predatory force.

And then, like... that caused everything to come crashing down more because I'm still unpacking all the stuff that like queerness and my Christianity and my faith and the Bible and all that sort of stuff.

And then unpacking this side of myself too and just being very confused and unsure about that.
