Drew and Rae-Ann commemorate October 3rd with a rewatch of Mean Girls. We talk favourite scenes, unforgettable quotes, how the movie hits differently as adults, and the ways Mean Girls Day has been…
What can you tell me about the movie? What's it about?
Well, I would say that there's a little bit of controversy about who the mean girls actually are.
I think it's, you know, one of the reasons that I think it's so relatable to everybody in every generation is because we've all gone through something like this with friend groups.
It's not, I don't think, always just girls, although girls tend to be the perpetrators of some of these kind of mean girl-esque things that the film does explore.
But we can all relate.
We've all had, you know, you know, I don't know, some iteration of the three-way call.
I don't know what that would be these days, but I definitely had that done to me in high school.
And we've, you know, just these little mean little things that kids tend to do to each other.
So I think it's just one of those, you know, great examples of, you you know, films that, you know, like the John Hughes films used to do, like you could relate to what the teens are experiencing in there for the most part.
It's a little bit sensationalized, but there's a lot that you can see in yourself in films like this.
And I really think that that's what Mean Girls brings to the table and why it seems to be a favorite generation after generation.
Yeah.
Yeah, yeah.
I think this is definitely part of a pantheon of female-centric high school movies that I...
Don't know if we've gotten one that has resonated quite like some of the others.
Like you mentioned John Hughes movies, so like Pretty in Pink or Sixteen Candles is big examples there.
I haven't seen Clueless, but I feel like maybe that fits that vibe as well.
Oh, totally.
It totally does.
Yes.
That's what I was thinking, too.
