So rationalism starts, actually, really, if you want to talk about philosophical rationalism, just...

A side note here, people might go down in the weeds about a tradition that is way older than the rationalism that we're talking about here.

We're talking about Descartes and Locke and debates that they were having, which is that, OK, we've got knowledge, right? And there's this dispute that they had about, OK, is there any substantive, meaningful knowledge that we have that comes prior to having experiences? So the empiricists say that we have this a posteriori knowledge, which is knowledge we get through the experiences.

And maybe that's all of the knowledge that we get, right? Until you get your senses and pull stuff in and talk to people, that's the only way you can know stuff.

There are other folks, the rationalists, who think, no, no, no, we might not come into this tabula rasa, or we can use reason alone actually to come to some really substantive and important truths.

So in the comments, if you want me to talk with Carl about other early modern philosophy things, let me know.

And then you have the Slate Star Codex, which eventually becomes called the Astral Codex.
