Send us Fan Mail Why do so many Arab families treat therapy like airing the family’s dirty laundry? And why does setting a boundary suddenly mean…
And I wanted to actually ask you, I'm glad that you answered that question, right? Specifically about faith.
So I did this thing where I went and asked folks in my life who I know are like, I don't want to use the word anti-therapy, but it's not something that they would ever seek.
Whereas I feel it would be very helpful for them.
And that's one of the narratives or themes that I actually found across the questions is a lot of people are like, well, my faith is very solid.
Like, I feel like it's just me and Allah SWT.
And as long as I have Allah, I don't need anything else.
and i and i feel like like i get it yeah but i don't know can you talk to me a little bit about why you should still like why does it i don't i just want to say like are like one of my own selfish personal goals in doing this is to have whoever is watching understand that if you're like on the edge of seeking therapy or not seeking therapy or if this is something that you're toying the eye like it's okay like make it comfortable make it normal like there's nothing wrong with you If you want to go and seek this.
So I'm going to go through all of the themes that I've heard.
Awesome.
And I'm going to ask Sarah to address some of them because I feel like there's nothing wrong with that.
Okay.
Tell me a little bit about like, why does it, it doesn't make your, I don't know.
I don't feel like it makes your faith
Yeah, but I mean, I think there's like a historical and cultural like context that goes into that, right? Like therapy can be looked at, you know, if you focus on it from a medical model, right? Like there's the DSM and labels and diagnoses and who wants to...
The biomedical model is very Western, and I think a lot of our own community's cultural understanding of these stigmas comes from that, and it makes sense to me.
Definitely influences the way people think about therapy because they don't really know what it is maybe or maybe they think it is in competition of their faith or they have to pick one or the other or and maybe the people that have faith working for them 100%.
and they don't feel like they need therapy there's nothing wrong with that either it's just try not to like impose what's working for you on other people just because your relationship with god has been healing enough to allow you to function in a way that you're happy with uh great but that might not be somebody else's circumstances and that's kind of like the
That's kind of the gray area.
I feel like a lot of times, because a lot of times people are like, no, if you just prayed more.
And I'm like, yes, that works.
But sometimes like, I don't know.
Sometimes I need more than just to, and I'm not saying like, like I don't want anybody to think that like, oh, I don't feel like that works.
