And, you know, in the book, I talk about...

Uh, when I first got to MIT in the late seventies, uh, Eric Erickson, a great psychoanalyst, you know, where somebody who studied with Freud and brought psychoanalytic ideas to the United States.

And it was one of my teachers at Harvard.

And, uh, he came to MIT and, uh, And I told him about my study, that I was there to study.

How could Marx have erred so profoundly? How can we possibly think that Christ can be kept from politics when the Bible says that the governments of the world shall be upon his shoulders and that someday he will rule, as it says in Psalm 2? And then, of course, we think of Freud.

Freud thought that Jesus Christ was irrelevant.

He believed that all belief in God was the figment of our imagination because all of us wanted a father figure.

And so we made up the idea of God.

And of course, Freud thought that psychotherapy would answer all of our problems.

Well, today, if you do any reading at all, you know that psychotherapy is on the couch.

It is in desperate, desperate shape with hundreds of different theories.

And there are many ways that psychologically you can think about self-deception that some very prominent experts in the field over the last hundred years have explained.

From a dynamic perspective, starting with Freud, we talk about ego defense mechanisms.

These are ways that you're trying to protect yourself from painful life realities.

Denial, where you just flat out refuse to consider that something could be true, particularly about yourself.

And Freud ignored Christ, who is called in the Bible the Wonderful Counselor, the Mighty God, the Everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace.

So the subconscious mind can sound a little vague or even woo woo.

And like, um, it's interesting because I bet when I think Freud established subconscious mind, I mean, he was like, hey, people like thought he was crazy, right? Like these people that established this, like.

psychology, this training around the mind, we're like, this is made up.

But really what we're talking about are all of the processes happening outside of our immediate conscious awareness.
