What was your first reaction to this movie?
I will admit, I got about 10 minutes in and I had one of my, "Oh no, patriarchal systems are being upheld" [laughs] moments.
I might have set you up.
Just maybe.
[laughs]
Just maybe.
So the character at the beginning of the movie, we meet, um, the professor.
Professor Smith.
And our first kind of introduction to the professor, he's not really that likable.
He seems kind of scattered.
He seems quite pompous, and there's a scene where he acts in a very misogynistic way.
He does.
He basically tells women that they have no place in academia, to the point that they leave his class And I was very upset about this
Yeah, I set you up.
You did.
[laughs] Now, the reason why I knew I was setting you up is that I am familiar with the source material for this particular movie, and my understanding is you were not familiar with the source material.
I was not at all, no.
And this, I think, is really interesting.
So one of the things we discovered was that this movie, when released in the US, was called Mr. V instead of Pimpernel Smith, which leads me to think that they didn't think their audience would be familiar with the source material either.
I can see that.
This movie was actually based on a series of books called The Scarlet Pimpernel.
Okay.
Or The Scarlet Pimpernel series.
I have heard of it.
Okay.
