In Part Two of our history of tithing, we examine how the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has defined tithing over time –and whether the modern expectation to pay 10% of income actually…
The question is asked, how much the servants of God should be required to pay as a tithing? And the answer is, verily thus saith the Lord, I require all their surplus property to be put into the hands of the bishop of my church of zion for the building of mine house and for the laying the foundation of zion and for the priesthood and for the deaths of the presidency of my church and this shall be the beginning of the tithing of my people and after that those who have thus been tithed shall pay one-tenth of all their interest annually and there shall be a standing law unto them forever for my holy priesthood saith the lord Verily I say unto you, it shall come to pass that all those who gather unto the land of Zion shall be tithe of their surplus properties, and shall observe this law, or they shall not be found worthy to abide among you.
And behold, I say unto you, if my people observe not this law to keep it holy, and by this law sanctify the land of Zion unto me, that my statutes and my judgments may be kept thereon, that it may be most holy.
And this shall be an example, I think in sample, but example unto all the stakes of Zion, even so, amen.
So the way I interpret it is people, when they enter into Zion, when they enter into the church, they are required to pay all of their surplus property.
And then after paying all of their surplus property to pay one 10th of all their interest annually in their other properties.
be a standing law unto them forever? So one-tenth of all their interest, that's the law forever.
Just want to check that that's what that says.
It does.
So forever means it shouldn't change, right?
It does mean it shouldn't change.
Yes, that is what the word forever
Cool.
Just want to get that clear.
