After seeing Catholic apologist Noah ( @Jesus.andwhatnot ) argue that pornography may cause homosexual desires, I decided to dig into…
When I first heard this, I thought to myself, that doesn't seem like something the Washington Post would publish.
Sure enough, it isn't.
Not a huge mistake.
I've made this mistake myself before.
It was a study that was conducted on a very large pornography platform, and the aim was to determine if there is a correlation between somebody consuming pornography and being a member of the LGBTQ community.
wasn't a study, it was just a survey on a random porn website which I wouldn't expect a Catholic apologist to use as a reputable source, but here's where we hit our first research lesson of the day.
Sexual identity is actually a really complex phenomenon to study.
Look, I've spent decades both figuring out for myself and commentating on the intersection of sexuality and religion, and it's still a wildly complex topic and field for me to look into myself.
And on this topic overall, if pornography causes you to be gay, in order to establish temporal sequence, that is, watching porn leads to LGBT identity and not vice versa, you generally need to conduct a longitudinal study with the same sample of participants.
You cannot directly make grandiose conclusions about directionality while simply using cross-sectional research.
But we'll explain what all that means here in just a second.
