This week the hosts talk about Tom's 29th film, Valkyrie. If you're enjoying this podcast, be sure to check out Bat and Spider, 70mm, Twin Vipers, and the Paperkeg archives.
Someone check the numbers on that.
It must always be his 15th because we've only done 15 episodes.
That was a fake statement earlier.
This means we've done at least 30 episodes so far.
And I think we did Top Gun Maverick twice, technically.
But this is Brian Singer directed, Macquarie co-wrote.
I believe this is the first Macquarie work that they've done, which would lead to a very successful relationship soon after.
I was going to do some weird voice, but thank God I didn't.
Klaus von Stufenberg.
Ever heard of him? I certainly didn't before watching Valkyrie, but it turns out this is based on a real event.
He's a... a mouthy German colonel who does not agree with the Nazi party who gets regulated to North Africa during World War II.
So he is, after a failed assassination attempt, he's kind of tapped to become part of the resistance in Berlin with the The goal being to assassinate Hitler, take over Berlin as a military district, and then negotiate peace with the Allies instead of the impending Allied invasion of Germany, which is, at this point, I think less than a year away when the movie starts.
I'm just going to call him Tom because if you want to hear me say Stufenberg 10 times, I mean, I don't want that.
You don't want that.
So Tom, with his lovely wife, the Red Woman from Game of Thrones, they decide that Tom is going to do this and he becomes instrumental in and working with the generals, I guess the junior staff, Hitler's junior staff, it's not Goebbels, it's not like the SS, it's just the regular German army, and they come up with a plot to assassinate Hitler.
The first attempt was going to work, right? And then they got cold feet.
Then the second attempt, there was too many changes to the plan.
And eventually, as we know historically, it does not succeed.
But what we end up with is a great character study of anti-Nazism in Germany at the time of World War II, which I've studied a lot about World War II, and Adele has too, but it's the first I've ever heard of this story, so it's pretty interesting.
