Here's something you shouldn't do: go looking for the 13 Steps to Hell. Naturally, that's exactly where Gauge Illuminations is going. Maltby's 13 Steps to Hell is one of those roadside folklore…
It's the kind of place that you only go to if, in fact, you are doing what is called a gamified dare, which in its own way is a form of legend.
We've talked about that before, that you actually kind of follow the legend and take a trip to the place to kind of experience that.
First of all, in 1901, the Cemetery of Maltby's was established to make sure that the pioneers, the original people who went out there, those adventurers and explorers, had a place to be buried.
By 1905, a wealthy family, I told you Harley Warren, a wealthy family actually built a grave that had 13 steps that descended into the earth into a door.
By 1960 to 1980, the cemetery became less active, and then finally in 85, it falls into disrepair as it takes its last person that is allowed to be in Maltby Cemetery.
We've never really solved this problem, have we? Malls did it for about five minutes, but where do we put the teenagers? So they all end up going out there to kind of hang out and have their own personal space and get into all kinds of trouble, tell spooky stories, maybe drink a little something-something, smoke a little something-something.
And the idea is you're supposed to count them down slowly but surely with your eyes closed as you make your way down the steps.
Did you know that there's actually a term for fear of the number 13? It's Tristodecaphobia.
