Episode 7: The Shaman's Portal of Oklahoma

Jesus Christ.

There really is 320 acres of sand smack dab in the middle of Oklahoma.

It's actually on a park that is about 500 acres.

It's called Beaver Dunes Park, and it's actually flanked by the Beaver River.

It really is a gigantic anomaly.

It's one of the places in the center of the country where you can actually have dune buggies.

I mean, you can go to Beaver Dunes Park and rent dune buggies for the day.

There are a number of areas outside of the sand where you can camp.

where you can actually go with your friends and set up camp and then head into the dunes for the day.

There is green lightning, lots of green lightning as a matter of fact, but that's not uncommon in Oklahoma where there are a lot of tornadoes.

And before tornadoes occur, there's always a little bit of green lightning.

Certain things happen in the atmosphere that cause that to happen.

The thing is, is there's a lot more open space and a lot more dust there and a lot more possibility for the wind to whip up and create tornadoes.

Therefore, there's more green lightning there.

It really is a fun space if you're into it.

And this brings up the topic of legend tripping.

It's actually a term.

It really is an anthropology term where people... find out that a place has a legend attached to it, and they travel to that place, not just to enjoy the place itself, but to see if maybe they can be a part of the action.

All the other stuff we've talked about here, though, Never happened.

Three men in Coronado's exploration did disappear.

There is no mention of them being struck by lightning.

The Native Americans would move through the area, but they would never stick around or stay there.

There was nothing there for them to either farm or hunt.

The wildlife is very limited to the unsanded acres there, and it's not much anyway.

There are no reports of homesteaders or Colorado tourists.
