Rosemary's Baby: A Masterclass in Fear and Paranoia

And I remember... 27 years ago now, when the Blair Witch Project came out, it had its fans, its fierce defenders such as myself, but it also had a lot of people that were disappointed by the film because you don't see anything.

You don't see a monster.

There's a lot of suggestion.

There is a lot of silent, quiet, creeping terror and creeping dread in the Blair Witch Project.

But there is very little actual gore.

There is very little actual slasher movie stuff.

It's mostly up there.

It's what we think might be out there.

What we think might be about to happen.

What we think might happen.

Rosemary's Baby... is very much in the category of the Blair Witch Project insofar as you don't see that much.

It's not much of a spoiler either.

But it is a movie of incredible tension, incredible creeping dread.

And the feelings of paranoia, which, I mean, the movie was ahead of its time because we know the 70s, that was the decade for Hollywood to make movies with paranoid themes and characters who, well, it's not paranoia if they really are after you.

As in Dustin Hoffman, the marathon man, where he seems like, yeah, this kid is a little, no, no, he knows exactly what's going on.

They really are out to get him.

That encounter in the park was not an accident.

He was targeted.

Yeah, I think you're over.

No, no, no, no. That's what happened.

Robert Redford's entire crew in Three Days of the Condor does not just randomly get murdered.

They got murdered for a particular reason.

It's not paranoia if they really are after you.
