The Abyss

This movie is probably out of every, and I'm not lying.

I looked at every movie we've ever reviewed.

This has top five, if not top three, highest reviews of any movie we've ever covered.

Godzilla minus one on right now.

Rotten Tomatoes is a 99 on the tomato meter and a 98 on popcorn meter.

And darn it, I agree with it.

Back to the Future Part 2 was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects at the 62nd Academy Awards.

It lost to The Abyss.

It won the Saturn Award for Best Special Effects, and it also won the BAFTA Award for Best Special Visual Effects.

And obviously, Back to the Future Part 3 released six months later, but I'll save that for a potential future episode that hopefully won't take quite so long.

It's a very lush kind of place.

Now, Cayman Trench, your deep dive there, isn't that the trench that the abyss is set in? So now, what do you think about that movie, The Abyss? So this is a James Cameron movie, and I think this is probably one of the ones that set off James Cameron's obsession with the deep sea.

So it's got deep sea mining vessel, and spoilers, they have aliens.

So what do you think about that movie, seeing as you've actually been there? Oh, wait a minute.

I took him out on a small boat around the dock.

the port of southampton to show the birth that titanic sailed from and i was like oh my god do not you know do not tip james cameron into the estuary but it turns out he's you know he is interested in titanic but very much the drama of the four hours or whatever from hitting the iceberg to sinking the rest of the history not you know not not particularly but of course utterly fascinated by deep sea exploration so we just ended up spending the day talking about that But you can see how he is absolutely driven and deep and focused.

And when they were filming The Abyss, they filmed it in, I think it was an enormous artificial pond.

I think it was created as part of a nuclear power plant or whatever.

He also has worked in the art department up until 2004 on films such as Dick Tracy, Back to the Future 2.

He was an uncredited miniature effects artist on The Abyss, as well as Earth Girls Are Easy, Ghoulies Go to College.

That's like the fourth one or something.

And Will's, well, not Will's favorite film, my favorite film.

Do the Right Thing was on its sixth week of release in 15th pla- I mean, it's so many good films around at that point.

The following week, James Cameron's The Abyss opens.

Costs...

How much did that cost? What, 40-odd million? Groundbreaking effects.

It opens with 9.3 million in second place.

Parenthood has held the top spot, dropping just 7.9% of its business, and the word of mouth on Parenthood was great.

So The Abyss then opens in second and can't dislodge it.

A Nightmare on Elm Street: The Dream Child is in third with eight million, and then you're back in your Turner & Hoochs at that point.

Do we see that in

the movie The Abyss with Ed Harris and Michael Biehn and all of them?

Yeah.

Something like that.

Yeah, we figured it out.

Yeah.
