The Boston Celtics are getting ready for their training camp that starts in one week’s time and it all begins with Jayson Tatum. Tatum got his feet wet late last year after returning from an Achilles…
Where do you start? Well, of course, you have to start with Jason Tatum with this basketball team.
And this is the first season of his NBA career he will have without Jalen Brown.
If you look at it, I know it's a different sport, no crossing sports, but if you look at Daniel Jones in the NFL, if you look at George Kittle in the NFL, both had Achilles injuries, both ready by week one this season.
So this injury, the recovery, the surgery, the understanding of what it does to the body and how best to repair this issue is It is so much more well-known now than it has ever been.
And Jason Tatum, even when he was at 80% last year when he came back, and I think that's safe to say, about 80%.
Now, yes, his shooting wasn't as good, 32.9% from three, 41% from the field, 82% from the free throw line, but he exceeded expectations.
I did not expect Jason Tatum to look as good as he did right out of the gates coming back from that injury and from that surgery.
So the first thing I want to look at with Tatum getting ready for this year is his usage, because, again, there's no more Jalen Brown.
So how will that impact the usage rate of Jason Tatum this year? Now, usage rate, in case you don't know, estimates the percentage of a team's possessions that end with a specific player taking a shot, attempting a free throw or committing a turnover while they're on the court.
If you look at usage rates around the NBA, if you're hovering at 30% or above, you are an elite guy.
