And by way of review, The book is titled Numbers because there are several occasions in which God will take a census or count his people or count the Levitical priesthood or count the firstborn of the Israelites.
He is counting men over 20 and so forth because he wants to bring order to the people.
See, he doesn't want people falling into chaos as they get up and move every time several hundred thousand people get up and go to the next position or station.
When the pillar of fire moves or the cloud moves, that's when the children were to move.
That's when the priests were to start packing up and then moving to the next destination and following that pillar of fire and the cloud by day.
He's making these people, this rabble that was in slavery in Egypt for several centuries, into a nation.
He wants them to walk in his ways because certainly the nations around Israel weren't walking in those ways.
God always works things for the good of those who believe and are called according to his purpose.
Now, if you take away the spirit from any nation, you know that nation won't last for long.
