Kehath

Mattathiah, a Levite, and the oldest son of Shalom, the Korathite, the Korahite, was entrusted with baking the bread used in the offerings.

And some members of the clan of Kohath were in charge of preparing the bread to be set on the table each Sabbath day.

That just makes me think like, am I satisfied? I don't know if satisfied seems like a silly word to say, but I'll just say it that way.

With my part, with my assignment, or do I wish I had someone else's? Or am I like, why can't I do the whole thing? Really? I'm just supposed to peel? Okay, I've shared that our church is feeding all of those people who were displaced from the fires up here.

But this just makes me think that.

What is it in your life that you need to examine in yourself? One of them was entrusted with baking the bread.

One time, Kontorokos, some Roman official, asked Rabbi Yohanan Ben-Zakai, This is actually a very good question.

In the census at the beginning of Bemidbar, when it counts all the Leviim, when it gives the details of each of the families of the Leviim, Gershon, Kehat, Merari, if you add them all up, you'll find 22,300.

However, right after that, when it gives the total, the total is 22,000.

Where did the other 300 Levim go? The details don't add up to the total.

Verse, verse one says, "Now Korah the son of Izhar, the son of Kohath, the son of Levi," this is of the tribe of Levi, "with Dathan and Abiram the sons of Eliab, and On, the son of Peleth, sons of Reuben," here it is, "took action." You see all of those names? These people are posse-ing up.

They, they are developing a group because evil never acts alone.

Yeah.

Let's hit the Levites today.

The sons of Levi were Gershon, Kohath, and Merari.

Um, that's actually cool because it makes me think of the Kohathites and they're the ones that had to carry stuff on their shoulders.

See how we retain this kind of information.

You may be here and have just come off of reading like Leviticus and numbers and Deuteronomy.

And then I was able to go and find it.

The sons of Levi, Gershom, Kohath, and Merari, and these are the names of the sons of Gershom, Libni, and Shammai, and the sons of Kohath were Amram and Izhar, and Hebron and Uziel, the sons of Merari, Mali and Mushi, and these are the families of the Levites according to their fathers' houses, of Gershom, Libni his son, Jahath his son, Zimah his son, Joah his son, Iddo his son, Zerah his son, Jeathari his son, the sons of Kohath, Amminadab his son, Korah his son, Asir his son, Elkanah his son, and Ebi Asaph his son, and Asir his son, Tahath his son, Uriel his son, Uzziah his son, and Shaal his son, and the sons of Elkanah, Amasai, and Ahimoth.

As for Elkanah, the sons of Elkanah, Zophai his son, and Nahath his son, Eliab his son, Jeroham his son, Elkanah his son, and the sons of Samuel, the firstborn Joel, and the second Abijah, the sons of Merari, Mali, Libni his son, Shemai his son, Uzzah his son, Shemiah his son, Hagiah his son, Azaiah his son.

And these are they whom David set over the service of song in the house of Jehovah, After that the ark had rest.

And this will come up later, and it's important.

You have Gershon, Kohath, and Merari.

These were the three sons, and they are the ones that will take the tabernacle through the wilderness.

Quite interesting.

The children of Israel today, the average Jew could not tell you what tribe he belongs to.

But back here, they had to be sure of these things because, you see, it's a genealogy leading to Jesus Christ.

And then we have in verse 18, the sons of Kohath, Amram and Izhar and Hebron.

And you will notice that Amram is named after the father of Moses.

I'm going to start with a few verses from the top of the 16th chapter because I wanted you to catch some phrasing that will help us to get to the heart of this.

Korah, the son of Izhar, son of Kohath, son of Levi, along with Dathan and Abiram, sons of Eliab, and own son of Peleth, descendants of Reuben, took 250 Israelite men, Leaders of the congregation, chosen from the assembly, well-known men, and they confronted Moses.

Look at the kind of guys they picked.

Good dudes, right? Well-known, chosen, leaders.

Okay.

Now Korah, the son of Izhar, the son of Kohath, the son of-

Sorry, Izhar.

Start again, Izhar

Now Korah, the son of Izhar, the son of Kohath, the son of Levi; with Dathan and Abiram, the son of, the sons of Eliab, and On, the son of Peleth, sons of Reuben took men.

And they rose up before Moses with some of the children of Israel, 250 leaders of the congregation, representatives of the congregation, men of renown.

So if we're starting in Numbers 16.1, and here's where we're going to start to see that something peculiar is going on here.

Because verse 1 says, Now Korah, son of Izhar, son of Kohath, son of Levi, along with Dathan and Abiram, sons of Eliab, and On, son of Pelleth, son of Reuben.

On disappears from the narrative.

Yeah, on just goes away.

Right.

And this may be a relic of kind of an early confrontation between different priestly schools, because Korah could have been the spokesperson for another priestly school, another Levitical priesthood.

So we have the Aaronide, but we have another Kohathite priesthood.
