Nov 4, 2026 · 36 min · 17 segments
TIis the season, so today Jess and Lauren are giving book reccos to the Gilmore Girlies! Long-timers may remember an episode recommending books with the same themes as Gilmore Girls but this time…
And we both agreed for this one that it needed to be like rooted in education and learning.
And, and so when we read this book earlier this year, Both of us agreed this is the perfect book for Rory.
So I'll drop the snob.
When Yale student Lily arrives in Taipei for a summer study at the National Taiwan University, she's looking forward to working on her Chinese language and finding her Chinese self.
If only it was that simple.
When her grandfather suddenly dies, Lily discovers a past so profoundly heartbreaking that she finds herself stuck Unable to move forward, but her grandfather's story is not her own.
None of it happened to her.
How can Lily reconcile with who she is, with where her family are from and when she's caught between their past and their present? So obviously there are some themes in this book that Rory will not identify with, but I think Rory is a very well-rounded girl and likes to hear from other people's perspectives.
But I think what is... crucial in this book is lily is such a type a she's an overachiever it's
called type a story but like totally different
oh my god i've only just yeah she is type a and she goes to type a she's an overachiever she's not used to not being the smartest person in class so what happens at chilton
is that what it's called Yeah.
It's called Chiltern.
Really good point.
mainland China.
So she kind of feels guilty that she's not, she just doesn't know it.
She doesn't know the land, like her mother tongue.
She can't converse with her grandparents or her parents.
Well, she obviously can converse with her parents, but it's like, she just doesn't have, she's second generation.
