TGBTU 21 | The Secret THREAT To America's Public Lands | John Leshy, On Common Ground
J
26:53John LeshyGUEST
One of my favorites, I actually got 30 more years ago, nearly 40 years ago, I wrote a book about the Mining Law of 1872 and its history and how it came about.
J
27:02John LeshyGUEST
Because it was the classic public land law of the so-called Gilded Age.
J
27:08John LeshyGUEST
This is decades after the Civil War, when the attitude of Congress was...
J
27:13John LeshyGUEST
Let's throw open all these public lands in the West to completely to resource exploitation.
J
28:11John LeshyGUEST
The law is still in effect.
J
28:12John LeshyGUEST
I mean, what, 15, 124 years later.
J
28:17John LeshyGUEST
The mining law of 1872 is the last vestige of congressional policy toward public lands in the Gilded Age, although it's been narrowed over the years.
J
28:27John LeshyGUEST
So fossil fuels no longer are under the mining law.

20:33Daniel RomanHOST
They just knew that was a fun way to leave the season.
D
20:36Daniel RomanHOST
So yeah.
D
20:38Daniel RomanHOST
And I mean the gilded age, you know, that's one that has like, built quite a following that's hbo's uh like early 1900s i believe like uh aristocracy type show uh set in the americas so yeah there's stiff competition the diplomat on netflix is also pretty well regarded i don't know that it will win but man we'll celebrate if it does
M
21:06Marq NettlesHOST

D
26:13Dave MartinsonHOST
We're just going to go through the main categories here in terms of the genre and acting categories.
D
26:18Dave MartinsonHOST
Outstanding Drama Series, of course, their field is The Diplomat, The Gilded Age, The Night of the Seven Kingdoms, The Pit, Pluribus, Slow Horses, and Your Friends and Neighbors.
D
26:28Dave MartinsonHOST
I think this is going to be The Pit Season 2, obviously the most nominated show of the Emmys this year.
D
26:35Dave MartinsonHOST
The Emmys, historically, most recently, you know, the 2020s, let's say, even with the late 2010s, they like to give a small amount of shows a lot of nominations.
D
29:52Dave MartinsonHOST
A drama actress, of course, does not have a contender from The Pit, which makes it at least a little bit more interesting.
D
29:57Dave MartinsonHOST
You have Ray Sehorne here for Pluribus, Keri Russell for The Diplomat.
D
30:01Dave MartinsonHOST
carrie coon for the gilded age zendaya for euphoria season 3 and chase infinity for the testaments feels like this is going to be ray seahorn for pluribus probably the biggest award that pluribus will end up winning maybe also get some writing love as well that is a great way to honor that first season especially if the pit's gonna ultimately trump pluribus in you know the series category ray seahorn belatedly very lately getting love for better call Saul this is basically like the make do I would say and very justly earned I guess that there's one to consider as a spoiler I think it's probably Keri Russell for the diplomat you know um I love Zendaya in Euphoria, but obviously Euphoria basically got blanked everywhere else.
D
30:45Dave MartinsonHOST
Can't really predict that.
THE PITT Season 2 - "7 AM" & "8 AM"

David Conrad-Pérez — Fire in the Heart of the City: The Triangle Shirtwaist Tragedy and the Origins of Modern Charity - with Heather Boushey
D
24:32David Conrad-PérezGUEST
No, that's a, yes, that's a great, so to go into New York and then we'll go into the Met.
D
24:36David Conrad-PérezGUEST
So if, I mean, if anybody's seen the period pieces of New York, like Gilded Age and these other things, you know this basic storyline that, you know, New York back then was this place of enormous wealth and poverty, and these two worlds are living right on top of each other.
D
24:49David Conrad-PérezGUEST
So, you know, uptown you have the philanthropists, the newspapers, the Macy's that are now these kind of big new department stores with window shopping as a new thing, their grand chandeliers, you have these, you have these castles on Fifth Avenue.
D
25:04David Conrad-PérezGUEST
It always strikes me just walking in New York City now when you think of all the restaurants and department stores and all these apartments that take up one block.

S
42:18Saagar EnjetiHOST
This is how I know we are truly back in the Gilded Age because the hallmarks of the Vanderbilt, I encourage everybody to go read it, The First Tycoon, one of my favorite books I've ever read.
S
42:28Saagar EnjetiHOST
It is a biography of Cornelius Vanderbilt.
S
42:31Saagar EnjetiHOST
It literally is just a tale of these Gilded Age, cutthroat barbarians who just s- like steal each other's stuff.
S
42:39Saagar EnjetiHOST
They're constantly price cutting and warring and stealing each other's employees, and then coming in and threatening the other person and suing them in court.
S
42:49Saagar EnjetiHOST
Some of our most important court decisions actually stem from their thievery of each other and from breaking the law.
K
46:01Krystal BallHOST
Yeah.
S
46:01Saagar EnjetiHOST
So just j- again, to give you examples.

A
37:05Andy GreenwaldHOST
I think you can make the case for Knight of the Seven Kingdoms because it was so deeply surprising and just so absolutely wonderfully made.
