Yeah, Les Mis premiered in December of 2012 after being in development hell for basically... 1980 on.
This is directed by Tom Hooper with an all-star cast of Hugh Jackman, Anne Hathaway, Russell Crowe, Samantha Barks, and on and on and on.
This film is really well known for everyone being recorded live for their vocals, which we'll talk about whether that was good or bad.
On a $61 million budget, it ended up making $442.8 million and is kind of regarded as one of the best musicals of the 21st century, which I'm sure we'll litigate here.
Yes.
So what is your history with Les Mis as a musical and as a movie musical?
Yeah, so 2012, I was 13.
You know what age 13 is? Prime Tumblr time.
So when this came
out...
Yeah, 13 in 2012, for sure.
Yeah, I was deep in the Tumblr trenches in terms of Les Mis.
It's a musical that I probably didn't see live until...
But this musical came out as a movie and I was I had I read the book like I was really, really deep in it.
I have a lot of fond thoughts towards the story in the musical itself, maybe less so towards the movie.
But I do think it's an important cultural touch point in my life in terms of musicals that I've been a part of.
And I personally think the score and the songs are amazing.
I have a lot of fond memories playing a medley for this and commencement band in high school.
Yeah, I really do like this property.
the film maybe a little up in the air what i like about it and what i take from this to carry on to the future but there's a really there's a part of me that really loved like the what the core of this musical is
yeah
what about you
yeah i you know i did it in my high school when i was in ninth grade
oh
and i was that soldier who sings you went the barricade listen to this you know that part it's a good part yeah um it happens twice in the musical than only once in the movie but anyway um so that was like really my exposure to it and then the movie came out uh you know whatever that was five or so years later six years later um and i remember feeling like Mostly negative about it because of the filmmaking style and some of the casting and whatever.
