In this episode, Fr. Ben Jeffries and I discuss a wide range of topics centering around the retrieval of orthodox Anglicanism!
Even though I grew up in England and I was, my dad was Baptist, so I never went to Church of England growing up.
Um, so Res was my first encounter of Anglicanism and I, I studied theater in undergrad, and so the sort of having a script made a sort of intuitive sense to me.
Like, oh yeah, you like take on this script and you, you mean these words out of your own heart.
It's like that idea of, like, liturgical participation was really kind of the initial in- inroad for me.
Yeah.
Um, I didn't, uh, like many college students, to my shame, I was not the most faithful attendee in those years.
It was sort of like, I think I was batting m- at best a 500 for Sunday attendance.
So I didn't get the full sort of Anglican stamping, uh, like, by my own, uh, neglect.
Uh, but, um, and so after college I didn't have a strong sense of what was Anglican distinctives other than liturgical worship.
Um, so in a roundabout way, in my mid-20s I discerned a call into ordained ministry through working at a psychiatric hospital and then working as a chaplain and getting a sense of call, like, oh, I also wanna teach and be a part of the whole Christian discipleship picture, not just pastoral care.
Wow.
So I was like, "Oh, I'll just go to seminary and get a degree, and I guess then I'll be a priest."
Yeah.
And I mentioned that to the admissions counselors, they just laughed, and they're like, "You dummy, [laughs] that is not how this works."
[laughs]
And so I was like, "Oh, I need to ask my rector?" And so I was like, he like, "Yes, of course." And so I kind of-
Mm
... you know, got some of that remedial education, began the ordination process.
