Careers Special: Getting into Comms

So let's start by setting the scene for someone who's never come across our industry before.

What does, I know it's a huge question, what does a career in PR and comms entail? What's a day look like? Yeah.

I think it's really varied.

So our ultimate aim in PR is getting our clients in the media for a positive reason.

And so it's lots of creative ideation.

It's then creating the assets that go with that.

So writing the press releases, commissioning the photography, but perhaps some videography to go with it.

And then it's dealing with the media.

So pitching to the media to persuade them to cover your story, reporting back to your clients or stakeholders, and then evaluating the success of your work.

Yeah, it's a lot of work.

It's a lot of hard work.

It's a lot of fun.

It's definitely a lot of fun.

Every day is different in PR, certainly in a PR agency as well.

So one day you might be talking to the media, you might be writing press releases.

The next day you might be doing filming with The One Show in this morning.

So yeah, it's a lot of work, but a lot of fun.

Yeah, I remember, I think it was my dad who said to me, you should consider...

I wanted to be a journalist so very, very much.

And he said, you should consider a career in PR.

And I was like, well, what on earth is that? And I think he said, advertising is controlling what you say about yourself.

PR is controlling what other people say about you, which I think...

Explained it very nicely, actually.

There are a lot of similarities but differences too, aren't there? Definitely.
