When a man involved in the world about him begins to reflect and tells himself, what a fool am I to be thus involved? Should I not study the shastras and get the slaving glance of good persons who have the experience of the truth? Such a desire preceded by a sense of detachment.
The next one, stage two, vicharana, is an active inquiry into the nature of reality preceded by study of the shastras association with the good and the wise, vairagya and meditation.
So you attend Vedanta classes, think about it, reflect about it, lead a life designed for inwardness, inquiry, associate with other Vedanta students and Vedanta masters.
Third one, tanumanasa arises when the attachment to sense objects gets tenuous.
So one may talk about Vedanta and Buddhism and then finally grumble that, but my son doesn't listen to me.
So if your big issue is my son doesn't listen to me, my daughter doesn't listen to me, then we have to concentrate on the second stage to purify the mind, to focus the mind on enlightenment.
When that doesn't matter, son may still not listen to you, but he doesn't matter too much to you.
