When I was a little boy growing up in northwestern PA, my world was my family.

From where we lived in the Appalachian Mountains, I could see those hills, and there were deer, chipmunks, birds, bear, turkeys.

And when a snowstorm came through or lightning lit up the sky, it was just something that I was curious about.

I just couldn't believe that nature had this kind of power, and you don't have to travel very far to find something that you don't understand when you're a little boy, and I was curious.

We'd hitch up our little 19-foot covered wagon, I think my dad had a Bonneville, and we would go about 30 minutes away, right off the, uh, the Allegheny River at a place called Clark's Campground.

We would float down the Allegheny River in a rubber raft, and I started paying attention about this age to what was happening in the world a little bit more, realizing that there were actually wars.

And I was beginning to read and see things about places I had never, ever seen before.

There were laws and rules that I was now having to, to learn and pay attention to.

There was a whole world beyond the part that my mother could see from the house, and I was beginning to explore this.
