Allegheny River

You know, kind of first jet boat.

You kind of want that little extra safety cushion since we only know the Allegheny River floating down a raft.

Yeah.

And boy, things look different upstream than downstream.

And oh my gosh, guys, just the walk in itself from downtown to the stadium was just beautiful.

Like, oh my goodness, it's Pittsburgh's North Shore directly along the Allegheny River with the skyline all around you.

The best way to get there is walking over that bridge for sure.

The city is like a part of the whole process.

For whereas spring's couriers were once the evidence of our finer senses, now the Associated Press does the trick.

The warble of the first robin in Hackensack, the stirring of the maple sap in Bennington, the budding of the pussy willows along the main street in Syracuse, the first chirp of the bluebird, the swan song of the blue point, the annual tornado in St. Louis, the plaint of the peach pessimists from Pompton, New Jersey, the regular visit of the tame wild goose with a broken leg to the pond near Bilgewater Junction, the base attempt of the drug trust to boost the price of quinine foiled in the house by Congressman Jinks, the first tall poplar struck by lightning and the usual stunned picnickers who had taken refuge, the first crack of the ice jam in the Allegheny River, the finding of a violet in its mossy bed by the correspondent at Round Corners.

These are the advanced signs of the burgeoning season that are wired into the wise city, while the farmer sees nothing but winter upon his dreary fields.

But these be mere externals.

They've started a new tradition.

Every year they go down to the banks of the Allegheny River and they baptize people in the water, in the river.

Okay.

All right.

You know, they'll be fine, you know.

And our second thing is we have a family cabin up in the Allegheny forest, right on the Allegheny river.

Um, it was a place we, you know, took our children growing up, you know, and our grandson goes with us and it's just one of our favorite places to go.

Cause again, it's, you know, kind of in the middle of nowhere, you know, there's not a lot around.

The old inhabitants of the present town recollect them, but there are now no remains of these early attempts at luxury and comfort.

After Fort Pitt came into the possession of the Americans, it was occupied but for a short time, when the garrison was removed to a spot about a mile further up on the Allegheny River, where a picket work and block houses were erected and called Fort Fayette.

This post was occupied by the United States troops until the erection within a few years past of the arsenal two miles further up.

The location of the arsenal as a military post is injudicious, and so little skill was exerted in its erection as to render it not susceptible of defense.
