David NeerHostThe big question is, does a midterm convention help the party in power or hurt them? You might be wondering, you might be puzzled.
Hey, the president's at a 35.7% average approval rating among all adults, according to this great website.
I go to 50plus1.news. And that environment is holding a convention where the president and all of his allies have their face splattered all over cable news for at least two nights and maybe no more.
Is that good for the party in power? And you're going to think probably not.

But before we even get there, I just want to make a point about like first principles about the conventions.
The reason that we care about conventions is because they're focusing events.
right they focus the media they focus social media and the news media um and they spread clips from the convention in the modern times uh on social media uh among not just partisans who of course are tuning in but also among neutral observers and people who don't spend all their time thinking about politics and consuming content on broadcast networks especially so Like from first principles here, we're sitting the day after the first night of the convention in which Trump spoke and will probably be like, The one that people pay attention to.
I don't think people are going to pay attention to the J.D. Vance night tonight.
This morning, I turned on CNN and I watched it on my second computer monitor.
Okay, I don't think they're getting the earned media bump that you would expect to matter from a normal convention, point being.
