Deirdra speaks with Brendan Bell, CEO of West Kitikmeot Resources Corporation, who is working to develop one of Canada’s most ambitious northern infrastructure proposals: the Grays Bay Road and Port…
I guess before we get started, maybe you can tell us a bit more about West Kitikmeot Corporation and the group that it represents, and then we can get into the nuts and bolts of the project.
I'll skip a lot of the background, but tell you that West Kitikmeot Resources is ... largest shareholder are the Kitikmeot Inuit people of the Kitikmeot region of Nunavut.
We started life as a mineral explorer with a package of primarily gold properties, and the gold properties were selected by the Inuit along this future infrastructure corridor that we now know as the Arctic Economic Security Corridor, recently and newly rebranded.
So they selected these gold properties, I assembled some investment and a management team, and we were going to develop them, only to find out that KIA, who were the proponent of the infrastructure project, were gonna take a pass on role as proponent, and were looking for a new proponent.
We, given that we'd just staked this ground and had this territory, put our hands up and said-
... "We'll do this," because obviously our investment thesis was not nearly as strong without the infrastructure.
We are designing and permitting this infrastructure project, and off the side of my desk I'm looking for the money to pay for it, so that's keeping me busy.
