[Irish music] David Clarke is head of the Ameurgain Center, but who was Ameurgain? In short, according to the Book of Invasions, the Lebor Gabála Érenn, he was the first poet to set foot on the shores of Ireland, the Milesian, the Galician poet, Ameurgain.
And that was in my mind when I wrote the long poem, Eru and Ameurgain, um, which has been beautifully set to music by Colm Ó Cathain.
I imagined Ameurgain hearing, somehow, the music of Ireland calling him over the water.
What had been faint on that headland over the river was gaining in strength, a pulse that was somehow a flame, that was somehow a pulse.
Sometimes it sparked behind my eyes, and almost I tasted what I sought, a green land rising out of a gray and troubling form.
