Oren Michaely left private equity to build Elio Mortgage, raising $5 million to rethink how home loans get made. In this episode, he explains why Elio built its mortgage platform from the ground up…
Oren MichaelyGuestUm, I, I do wanna pick your brain about how you see the future of mortgage lending.
And then, look, at the end of the day, Oren's gonna tell you the future of mortgage lending is basically how ex- how he and his partners are building Elio Mortgage, right? I mean, but, you know, I want people to hear this so they know that if you're trying to be a part of the future, this is how one person who's super smart, who studies this, who has experience, is doing it.
Um, but before we get there, uh, I have a couple questions that anyone who tu- tunes into the show frequently, th- they, they know where I'm going with these questions.
Anyone who doesn't, all, all well and be like, "Oh, that guy's a good interviewer," awesome.
What do you say to the loan officer or the branch manager who for the past 30, 20, 15, 5 years, doesn't matter, they have not been working in computer sciences.
You coming with your background, your experience, um, w- what are you saying to those individuals that are great loan officers and they're great branch managers, but now they're staying up on a Sunday till 4:00 a.m. Vibe coding the next, whatever you call greatest, latest software? What, what's your advice to those people?

I mean, if they're already Vibe coding, that's great, because that means that they're getting their hands dirty, they're learning, they're pushing the boundaries, and an incredible amount can be achieved just through Vibe coding or use- using this, these off-the-shelf technologies.

Where it becomes more complex is, again, when you have to integrate different workflows, different systems, different data layers, and how do you structure the data, um, because Vibe coding can also be dangerous.

Initially, they were like, "We ch- we changed our, uh, requirements to integrate with us," because we found so many people Vibe coding that they were like, "We wanna integrate with you." So we need to, we need to show them a pedigree of like, "No, actually we're building here technology with engineers, with infrastructure, with security in order to do those integrations," because there are a lot of inherent security ri- risks with Vibe coding.

But to keep pushing the boundaries, that's what I would say is like keep pushing the limits of what you can do.
