So South Haven is expanding its leisure and entertainment district to include the top of the SIP, creating a larger walkable area connecting restaurants, businesses, and entertainment venues near Sutter Square and the Snowden Grove.
The entertainment district allows customers to carry alcoholic beverages and approved Go Cups purchased from participating businesses while remaining within the district boundaries.
Businesses currently located there include Walk-On's, Sweet Serenity, Abigadabi's Baking Company, and Banger's Pickleball.
City Attorney Nick Manley said the expanded district will stretch from top of the SIP towards Mesquite Chop House and around Bank Plus Amphitheater.
Mayor Darren Musselwhite said the existing entertainment district at Silo Square has been successful and has developed as city leaders originally hoped.
Musselwhite said he previously envisioned the area becoming a Snowden Square, similar to Overton Square in Memphis, where people could walk between restaurants, entertainment venues, businesses, and Snowden Grove Park.
Alderman Charlie Hoots asked whether a future board of aldermen could change or remove the entertainment district designation if open containers or other issues became a problem.
Musselwhite confirmed that future leaders would have the authority to change or revoke this designation if problems developed.
City leaders believe expanding the district will encourage additional entertainment and economic activity while giving participating businesses another way to promote themselves.
But overall, expansion is intended to create a larger, connected, and walkable entertainment destination centered around Silo Square, Top of the Sip, and Snowden Grove.
And just as a plug for my little favorite city of Olive Branch, I'm not saying favorite just because I own a business that would be benefited from an entertainment district, but I am.
