Southaven Mayor Darren Musselwhite and Olive Branch Mayor Ken Adams are supporting renewed efforts to restrict kratom across Mississippi following the deaths of two Ole Miss students.

The two students died on September 21st in Oxford where investigators reportedly found kratom packaging at both locations.

Authorities have not confirmed whether kratom caused their deaths, but kratom is a herbal substance commonly sold at gas stations, convenience stores, and vape shops.

It can produce stimulant-like effects at lower doses and opioid-like effects at higher doses.

Health officials have warned that kratom can cause dependence and serious health complications, particularly when combined with other substances.

Olive Branch Mayor Ken Adams strongly criticized the continued sale of kratom, comparing its availability to handing someone a loaded gun.

Several Mississippi cities, including Hernando and Oxford, have already enacted local Kratom bans.
