The Dark Times: A Sci-Fi RPG Podcast
Oct 21, 2026 · 59 min · 11 segments
Special thanks to Psi Prime Productions for their video showcasing Starship Combat! Link down below. Since Sam is out of town when the Tech Core drops in full, we've produced this episode in advance…
what, Sam? We got some feedback that we forgot to read two weeks ago.
Yes, absolutely.
This is from justnobodyfuckle on Reddit.
Big longtime fan of the show, I'm assuming.
Yeah.
Can you imagine listening to the podcast, commenting, and not being a fan? That'd be awesome.
We've had
a few of those before.
Just nobody says you guys are right on the money about how ridiculous the reaction to tech core is, and especially how it feels like everyone's first time being around for a system at launch.
I was very confused about this because I was around for the launch of Pathfinder second edition.
Guys, it was rough.
I tried to like that game, but PF2E at launch had no archetypes besides bad AP ones, a million bad design carryovers from PF1E, and basically nothing surprising or new.
We can talk about that in a second.
Starfinder 2nd Edition at launch is better by a country mile.
Even if you ignore the years of Pathfinder 2nd Edition content, you can backport.
Starfinder 2E has a lot fewer pain points, covers a lot of core class concepts and mechanics in one book, and most of all has a much more distinct personality and tone.
It feels like it knows what kind of game it wants to be a lot more than PF2E did at launch.
I agree with that.
Yeah,
hard to agree
there.
I was very confused by this reaction until I joined the PF2E Discord and started asking people about it.
I was genuinely kind of shocked to find out how many players only started playing in the last few years, either because of the pandemic or the OGL D&D stuff, so many people had never even seen pre-remastered PF2E.
This is the first edition launch for a lot of people.
Just nobody for cool.
