He knew recovery worked. He had almost eight years sober to prove it. Then came nearly 20 years of addiction. At 51, Teddy finally stopped trying to *know* his way into recovery and fully conceded to the truth. Teddy B. knew how to get sober. He had already done it once for nearly eight years. But knowing about recovery and fully surrendering to it turned out to be two very different things. After returning to alcohol and crack cocaine, Teddy spent nearly 20 years cycling through addiction, treatment centers, detoxes, and increasingly dark places. Beneath it all were wounds and secrets he had carried since childhood, abuse, resentment, questions about his family, and a part of himself he had been afraid to fully reveal. Then someone offered Teddy a simple idea that began changing everything: Perhaps what you believe isn't how things really are. At 51, Teddy finally “fully conceded” to his innermost self that he was an alcoholic and drug addict. With his sponsor Brian H., the Twelve Steps, and additional work through Adult Children of Alcoholics, Teddy began looking at more than his addiction. He started looking at the beliefs, pain, and resentment underneath it. That journey eventually led to an unexpected truth about his mother and the forgiveness he never thought possible. Today, sober from alcohol and crack cocaine since April 5, 2015, Teddy sits on the other side of the desk as a substance-use disorder counselor. The experiences that nearly destroyed him have become part of how he helps others believe their lives can change too. Teddy's story is a reminder that sometimes knowing the way isn't enough. We must fully concede before we can finally become free.
