Episode 400 - Positive They Probably Did

I'm currently in the middle of the Questlove Earth, Wind & Fire documentary on HBO Max.

It's excellent.

If you've never seen a Questlove documentary, you're missing out.

I also watched the first episode of Jay-Z in 8.

And I feel like it could be Jay-Z in 1.

I'll say this.

It's directed by Rick Rubin and it features Rick talking to Jay-Z as Jay-Z unearths meaning behind a lot of songs and more specifically, a lot of lyrics within songs.

And we get insight into those songs that is previously unseen.

However, I do think the audience, me included, myself included, Wanted to...

Sorry, I had to sniff.

I don't know what information people wanted to gleam from it, but I think I wanted to learn more about Jay's process, which we did get hints at, but...

It's also, you know, the first episode was 47 minutes, and it was like 10 minutes of them listening to whole entire songs.

So

you're just sitting there, and you're watching lyrics pop up on screen like you're watching a YouTube lyric video, and they're just nodding their heads.

It's a fine documentary.

It's well-crafted, and 20 years ago, people would have just eaten this up.

But now, I think...

It's probably going to come and go.

Whereas one of the more just as accessible but more groundbreaking documentaries of the last year includes The Last Dance.

And it's a documentary I just bought digitally.
