The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes presents “Colonel Warburton’s Madness,” originally broadcast September 10, 1945. This archival episode is number 183 in the series.
While Dr. Watson and Mary holiday in the Thames-side village of Taplow, they encounter Ellen Warburton, who fears for her uncle’s sanity. Colonel Warburton becomes violently disturbed by a shrill whistle no one else seems able to hear, leading Watson to call on Sherlock Holmes at the forbidding Chevy Grange estate. Basil Rathbone stars as Holmes and Nigel Bruce as Watson in this original Denis Green and Anthony Boucher drama, inspired by an incident mentioned in Arthur Conan Doyle’s “The Adventure of the Engineer’s Thumb.”
The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes presents the original broadcast with a newly produced contextual introduction, a short closing announcement, and gently cleaned/mastered audio for a more consistent listening experience.
