After asking the Thame authorities to report to me at Oxford by telephone, I asked to be put through to Aylesbury.

Aylesbury, just across the border between Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire, is a town of nearly 30,000.

It is a well-known center for straw and laces, and is a municipal borough, the capital of the county of Buckinghamshire.

Travelers by bus from Oxford to Aylesbury transfer at Thame, a few miles away.

As I anticipated, Thame knew nothing about a vacuum cleaner salesman named Podmore and answering to the meager description I was about to give them.
